How modern cars track you
A plain-language map of the sensors, modems, and accounts that turn a vehicle into a data product.
The car has a phone number
Most new vehicles include an embedded cellular modem—often called a DCM, TCU, or telematics control unit. It can send location, diagnostics, and usage data without using your smartphone.
If the modem is active, the vehicle can phone home even when you never open the brand’s app.
What usually leaves the vehicle
Common categories include location, driving behavior (speed, hard braking, trip timing), vehicle health codes, account identifiers (VIN, email, device IDs), and—when you pair a phone—contacts or message metadata.
Cabin cameras and microphones add another layer on some models, especially EVs and vehicles with driver-monitoring features.
Who receives the data
Automakers store connected-vehicle data in their clouds. From there it may be shared with dealers, emergency services, insurers, advertisers, data brokers, or law enforcement when required or requested.
The exact sharing graph differs by brand and by the consents attached to your account.
What you can actually control
Start with OEM privacy portals and in-car toggles. Cancel connected subscriptions you do not need. Request data-transmission deactivation when the brand offers it.
Event data recorders and many ADAS sensors cannot be fully removed without affecting safety systems. Perfect anonymity is rare; meaningful reduction is realistic.
